  Trying to eliminate a problematic gene (initially, a child born with severe combined immunodeficiency disease) is not new. It has the same problem as that did then (attempting gene knockout therapy, I believe): poor uptake resulting in phenotypic chimerization and treatment failure. I think they were modifying bone marrow for the child, and reintroducing the marrow. His cells ultimately reverted. And with HIV, we will see the reservoir effect as well.
